I’m not a doctor, but I have my opinions about the state of mental health in America. The problem is that it’s almost always hidden from the public, particularly among the people who are supposed to be “helpers.
Here in Missouri, mental health care is handled at the county level. Your county mental health director is your county mental health commissioner. Each county has at least one mental health commissioner. There are two mental health commissioners in each county. There are at least two of each. Each county also has a state mental health director who is responsible for the state mental health system. I was recently told by my county mental health commissioner that her county has a psychiatric hospital.
Mental health care is handled at county level. In Missouri, a county has a psychiatric hospital if it has at least one psychiatric hospital.
If a county has more than one mental health commissioner or psychiatric hospital, then they are in a “superior” chain of command. What this means is that in a supervisory role, one of these mental health commissioners has full power to take action and direct other county mental health workers. The county mental health workers then act as an extension of that county, and have some level of autonomy over mental health care. In some cases, these counties are part of the larger state system.
It’s important to note though that the county mental health commissioner is responsible for the care and treatment of mental illness, as well as the care of the mentally ill and their families. This is a big responsibility for the county.
To take action or direct other county mental health workers, you have to be aware of your agency’s responsibilities for the care of the mentally ill. When a county’s mental health commissioner takes action, this is usually a direct order, not the suggestion of doing something. If the mentally ill patient, family, or friend is in need, the county mental health commissioner should come to the patient’s/family’s/friend’s/patient’s home and take steps to make sure they are taken care of.
Mental health care is a state responsibility, so if a county mental health commissioner takes action to provide services to a patient, this is typically a direct order. But you also have to be aware of the mental health commissioner’s personal responsibilities and what they are.
The mental health commissioner is the individual whose job it is to ensure that mental health is being provided to all patients. All of these mental health commissioners have to sign off on what the county mental health commissioner is doing. The county mental health commissioner can direct the county mental health commissioner to take actions that the mental health commissioner feels should be taken.
The county mental health commissioner is in charge of the county mental health commissioner’s own mental health commission and the county mental health commission.
